Breaking News: Tomatoes price crashes from N25,000 to N800 per basket

A small basket of tomato, which sold for N25,000 in May, is now going for N800 in Kaduna. And, no, it is not a joke.

It had been all anger and pain for households as the price of tomatoes hit the roof across the country as a result of scarcity caused by tuta absoluta, also known as ‘tomatoc ebola’.

This affected the crop in most parts of the north-west, notably Kaduna, Jigawa, Katsina and Kano states.
As a result, the basket prices jumped from the range of N800-N1200 to between N25,000 and N40,000 at the height of the crisis.
At the Line Dogo (Rail Line) tomatoes and vegetable market in Kaduna on Saturday, it was a beehive of activities.
Buyers could not believe their eyes as tomato prices had crashed to a two-month low.
Abass Mai Tumatur, chairman of the tomato sellers, told TheCable it was a “pleasant relief” for everyone as tomato is now available and in large quantities.

“Tomato scarcity is nothing new, but it was made worse this year  by the invasion of the moth,” he said.
He said the insects mutate more during the dry season but don’t survive during the rainy season.
“The rains coupled with the efforts of government have helped tremendously in making tomato available,” he said, praising the government for the “timely intervention”.
He assured the public that the fear is gone now “and hopefully for good”.
Farmers were left stranded and helpless as the moth ravaged their farms and left destruction across the farming community, making a pot of soup as expensive as gold.
Hotels and restaurants, in particular, faced a nightmare as the crisis also shot up the price of canned tomato paste.
Many were not aware of the reasons for the scarcity as frantic efforts were made to to address the situation.
Nasir el-Rufai, the Kaduna state governor, declared a state of emergency and dispatched officials to Kenya to find ways of tackling the ravaging insects.
The cost of the destruction in the state, according to el-Rufai, was close to N1 billion.
Audu Ogbeh, minister of agriculture and rural development, also commissioned experts to find solutions to the disease outbreak “as soon as possible”.
The insect originated from South America around 1912 and has spread to other parts of the world.

Reports suggest the insect came to Africa through Republic of Niger.

Niigeria Prison Break:13 inmates Escape In Fresh Nigerian Jailbreak

Thirteen inmates escaped in a fresh jailbreak recorded at Koton Karfe prison in Kogi in the early hours of Saturday.
PRISON
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, gathered from a reliable source that the incident happened at about 7a.m. when the inmates forcefully brought down the wall of the prison.
The all male prison facility which was inaugurated in 2014 has the capacity to accommodate 180 inmates.
However, it was accommodating about 263 inmates as at the time of the jailbreak, Saturday.
One of the escaped inmates was re-arrested almost immediately by security agents, NAN reports.
This was the third jailbreak recorded in Koton Karfe as the old prison facility witnessed similar jailbreaks in 2010 and 2013.
In previous jailbreaks, 132 inmates escaped from the prison and majority were awaiting trials.
It was gathered that Comptroller–General of the Nigeria Prison Service immediately sent a representative to Koton Karfe to assess the situation.
The Kogi State Controller of Prison, Musa Maza, who would have shed more light on the incident, did not pick several calls made to his mobile telephone line.
Saturday’s jailbreak occurs about a month after two prisoners escaped in a jailbreak from a maximum security prison in Kuje, Niger State.

€50million Star has Agreed Contract to Seal Arsenal Move

Arsenal have been chasing the signature of Leicester City superstar Riyad Mahrez for quite some time and it will not come as any surprise if the Algerian attacker ends up moving to the Emirates this summer.

According to reports in the Algerian media (Le Buteur), Arsenal have already agreed terms of a contract with the 25-year-old playmaker who won the PFA Player of the Year award for his brilliant performances last season.

Leicester City won the Premier League title under the management of Claudio Ranieri and the Italian boss would not have been able to achieve the feat without Riyad Mahrez. The African star scored 17 goals and provided 11 assists for the Foxes in the last campaign.

As per the provided Le Butear link (via British media), Mahrez has a release clause of €50million in his contract, however, Arsenal can secure his signature for a fee of €44million.

Mahrez will form a world class attacking midfield partnership with Alexis and Ozil if he does move to Arsenal.

Nurses Shut Benin-Lagos Highway Over Colleagues’ Abduction

Vehicular and human traffic on the busy Benin-Lagos Highway was on standstill for several hours yesterday as nurses from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) protested the abduction of two of their colleagues by unknown gunmen.
This is coming few weeks after another colleague was kidnapped and later released after an undisclosed ransom was paid.

The abducted nurses were identified as Osemielu Lydia and Oviosu Bose, both Nursing officers grade II and were kidnapped yesterday in a private car along the Isihor axis of the Benin Lagos road, Egor Local government council, shortly after closing from work.
The protesting nurses brandished various placards with inscriptions like, “Nurses are public servants, enough of the kidnapping”, “UBTH Nurses say no to kidnapping” and “Release our nurses!”

Taking over major streets and federal highways in the state capital, they disrupted vehicular and pedestrian movements on the busy express road.

The protesting nurses who abandoned their duty posts also stopped over at the palace of His Royal Highness, Crown Prince (Amb) Eheneden Erediauwa, Edaiken N’ Uselu, and the Edo state House of Assembly Premises (EDHA) to register their displeasure over the incessant kidnap of nurses in the state.

It would be recalled that no fewer than four nurses of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) have been abducted in the last one month.
President of National Association of Nurses and Midwives (NANM) UBTH Branch, Austin Osigbemhe, who condemned the act of kidnapping nurses, appealed for their release unhurt.

”We frown at the evil act. Nurses are civil servants and should be protected and not targets of kidnappers. We need these nurses released unconditionally and unhurt.”
Efforts to reach the management of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) to comment on the situation was unsuccessful as the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Michael Ibadin was said to be presiding over a meeting at the time of filing this report.

Nigeria's Senate President Calls For Calm Over Boko Haram Attack On UN Humanitarian Convoy

The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Friday called for calm over the attack on the United Nations International Children’s Fund humanitarian convoy by suspected Boko Haram members.

The convoy was attacked while travelling from Bama to Maiduguri, both in Borno State.
Saraki in a statement by his Media Office, condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms, stating that it was unacceptable to endanger the lives of aid workers, who were only trying to assuage the situation in the North East.

“This unfortunate situation has led to the United Nation’s temporarily suspending its rehabilitation-related aid deliveries to parts of the North East,” the Senate President said, adding: “This is a major cause for concern as overtime, the Nigerian military has recorded significant successes in routing the insurgency and many foreign donor agencies have expressed their preparedness to join in the North East restoration efforts.”

Saraki further called for an immediate review of the security situation in the North East by the relevant authorities, stating that it was necessary to alleviate the concerns of international partners who are set to help rebuild the crisis-torn areas.
He said: “I also urge our military, the Department of State Security and the Police, to commence an immediate security re-evaluation and review of the entire North East zone in order to allay the fears of our donor partners. The partners are important to Nigeria’s work to reposition the North East after months of decimation at the hands of Boko Haram.”

Everton Rejects Chelsea’s £57m Bid For Lukaku

Chelsea have had a £57 million bid for Romelu Lukaku rejected by Everton – but are confident of agreeing a deal to re-sign him this summer.
The two clubs are haggling over a fee, with the Toffees holding out for a club-record £75million.

But they have finally accepted the 23-year-old striker is determined to rejoin the club they bought him off two years ago.

Chelsea ’s bid for Lukaku is more than double the £28m they received for him when he moved to Goodison Park in the summer of 2014.

Boss Antonio Conte has already landed one Belgium international striker, £33m Michy Batshuayi from Marseille, this summer and remains confident of keeping Spain frontman Diego Costa , despite sustained interest from his former club Atletico Madrid.

The fee Everton are demanding would be just short of the £78m deal which saw Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain – 29 in December – move from Napoli to fellow Serie A side Juventus this week.

It would be another monster payday for super-agent Mino Raiola, who is set to receive a £20m payment once the £100m transfer of Paul Pogba from Juve to Manchester United is confirmed.

Raiola has also profited from high-profile moves to Old Trafford for two of his other clients this off-season, superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Lukaku was one of the most prolific goal-scorers in English football’s top flight last season, netting 25 times in all club competitions.

He has been desperate for some time, however, to return to Chelsea.
Mirror Sport understands at least one other Premier League side keen on signing him this summer has already been told that he has his heart set on the club he first joined from Anderlecht in his homeland for £11m in August 2011.

Lukaku feels he has “unfinished business” at Chelsea who, despite a nightmare campaign last season as defending champions, still finished one place above Everton.
He was on the Londoners’ books for three seasons but spent the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns out on loan at first West Brom and then Everton. He only started once in the Premier League for the Stamford Bridge side, and never scored for them in 15 senior appearances.

New Toffees manager Ronald Koeman, backed by the millions of majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri, had been confident of persuading the marksman to stay on and spearhead a push for European football.

Instead, the Dutchman is now searching for alternatives with agreement on a fee all that stands between Lukaku and a return to the English capital.

UNBELIEVABLE : Cockroach Milk Is Rich In Protein, Fat And Sugar – Scientists Claim.

Lol… you just might rethink smashing that cockroach you see in your cupboard next time, why?! Well, scientists have claimed the popular irritating insect seen in most homes, has milk which is full of protein, and may someday be transformed into a food supplement worthy of human consumption.

CNN reports that scientists have found that the Cockroach feeds its bug babies a formula which is remarkably rich in protein, fat and sugar.

The protein crystals are milk for the cockroach infant. It is important for its growth and development,” said Leonard Chavas, one of the scientists behind the research.

He explained the crystals have a whopping three times the energy of an equivalent mass of buffalo milk, about four times the equivalent of cow’s milk.

“For now, we are trying to understand how to control this phenomena in a much easier way, to bring it to mass production,” Chavas said.

Having lost a drinking game with his colleagues, Chavas tasted the cockroach milk once.

“No particular taste,” he commented, though the idea of ice cream appeals to him. He imagines “a flavor with honey and crispy pieces.”

Chinese Man Condemned Online For Saving His Mother Over His Wife

A Chinese man has been condemned online after choosing to save his mother from deadly floodwaters instead of his wife.

Gao Fengshou’s wife and mother of his children has now left him after the split second decision to put his parent first, The Times reported.

The decorator acted as flooding spread towards his village of Xingtai in the north China province of Hebei on July 20, telling his family to clamber on to the roof.

He then left to see his mother and, when he returned, his wife and family had vanished along with a bundle of cash.

According to The Times, Mr Gao said afterwards there was not time to make a choice between the two women.

He said: “I can’t imagine what went through her mind when I went straight for my mother.

“Abandoning my mother would be reprehensible, but leaving my wife behind would be unacceptable as well. I know she must be so disappointed in me.”

But hordes of people on Chinese social media have slammed his actions, the paper reported.

One wrote: “It’s no wonder she left him. Who would want a husband who you can’t rely on in dangerous circumstances?”

Flooding across Hebei and neighbouring Henan province in recent weeks has killed 164 people and displaced more than half a million others

Dangote Drops Off List Of World’s 100 Richest Men – See New Position + New Net worth

Following the crash of the naira, Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote group, has dropped off the list of the 100 richest people in the world.

Dangote was the 51st richest man in the world as at March 2016, but he had dropped to 101 as at the start of business on Monday.

Dangote, who owns the second largest sugar-refinery in the world, remains richer than Donald Trump, American billionaire presidential candidate, and Oprah Winfrey, US TV personality, who dubs as the second richest black woman in the world.

As at today, Dangote net worth is $11.1 billion, while Trump and Oprah are estimated at $4.5 billion and $3.1 billion, respectively.

The fall in the naira, as against the dollar, from about 198 to about 300, has eroded about a quarter of Dangote’s wealth, as he commits to investing heavily in Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria.

At the launch of the new foreign exchange regime on June 23, 2016, Dangote fell from 46 on the world billionaire list to 71, and has continued in that manner with the naira plunge.

According to Bloomberg billionaires, Dangote, who was worth $15.4 billion (N3.05 trillion) in March, is now worth $11.1 billion (N3.3 trillion) —richer in naira, but poorer in dollars.

The launch of Dangote refinery, the biggest greenfield refinery in the world, billed for 2018/2019 is expected to propel him into top 20 by 2019.

Dangote Cement, one of Dangote’s major investments in Nigeria, is the biggest company on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, by market capitalisation, and the biggest cement producer in sub-saharan Africa.

The company however missed out of the 100 biggest companies in the world, according to Fortune 500.

PPMC May Hike Kerosene Price To N135 Next Week

The official price of kerosene may move up to N135 from N73 per litre next week, investigation has revealed.

According to reliable sources, the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has decided to increase the ex-depot price to N135 per litre with effect from Monday, after the next consignment of about 17,000MT capacity imported vessel arrives Lagos this week.

It was gathered that following foreign exchange crisis, which makes it difficult for the private marketers to access foreign exchange at the official price, the PPMC assumed the sole importer of kerosene, thus leading to the scarcity of the product.

But it was learnt that the public who are the end users would not be losing much as the product had always sold above the N73 official price because of racketeering by officials of PPMC and the marketers.

In the massive scam, officials of PPMC allocate the product to marketers at ex-depot price of N73 per litre, while the marketers sell to the public at over N180 per litre, investigation revealed.

In a circular number: PPMC/MKT/IBN/01/2016, signed by one LNS Madubuike, the PPMC had directed marketers to pay N73 per litre for kerosene imported by the company. The marketers, however, sell the product to the public at between N180 and N250 per litre.

Some independent marketers, who could not get allocation from the PPMC, said that some officials of PPMC collect bribe of N1 million on every truck of kerosene allocated to the marketers.

Another alleged scam by PPMC officials in kerosene importation, it was learnt, is that up to 50 trucks are not discharged in every imported vessel.

According to a PPMC source, after discharging kerosene to the private marketers, this quantity is left in the vessel by PPMC as Remain on Board (ROB) and nobody knows what happens to this product.

NNPC’s spokesman, Mr. Garuba Deen Muhammadu, however, said yesterday that he would find out the true situation from the PPMC before responding to the issues raised.

But it was gathered that PPMC has been the sole importer of kerosene as the private marketers use their limited foreign exchange to focus on the importation of petrol.

An official of PPMC, who was not happy with the fraud in kerosene allocation, said that it was brisk business between some officials of the company and the marketers.

“We thought that things will change with the new administration. It actually changed initially but is now business-as-usual. It does not serve public interest to allocate kerosene at N73 or N135 per litre to some people at public expense and the beneficiaries will sell to the public at N180 and even N250 in some instances. This arrangement serves private pockets and something has to be done fast about it,” he said.

Investigation revealed that from the last consignment imported by the PPMC, the independent marketers were selling at ex-depot price of between N170 and 182 per litre.
Some of the independent marketers whose depots had sold kerosene between N170 and N182 per litre include: Capital Oil, Eterna Oil; Rahamaniyya, Aquitane, AA Rano, and Obat Oil.

It was also gathered from PPMC sources that Honeywell, Aiteo and NIPCO Plc would share the next consignment of PPMC’s kerosene that will arrive this week.
However, it was gathered that PPMC has increased the ex-depot price of this new consignment from N73 per litre to N135 per litre.

It was also learnt that because of the scam perpetrated by the marketers and the PPMC officials in kerosene allocation, the major marketers have shunned kerosene business to protect their business integrity.

“The whole kerosene thing is messy and that is why the major marketers do not want to get involved. The major marketers are not ready to give anybody bribe and sell above stipulated price. The whole thing improved when President Buhari came in initially. You will recall that For

Frustrated Motorcycle Rider Commits Suicide

A motorcycle rider, identified as Monday Onoja, hanged himself on Tuesday in the Ijebu Igbo area of Ogun State.

Monday, 45, who had been incapacitated after an accident, was said to be dependent on his wife.

It was learnt that the father of five expressed dissatisfaction with his life the previous day and threatened to kill himself.

Efforts by his wife, Esther, and a relative to make the Benue State indigene change his mind
reportedly proved abortive.

The victim was reported to have woken up early and hanged himself in his room.

The corpse of the motorcycle rider was discovered around 8am at the victim’s residence on Ogunnaya Street, Ojowo, Ijebu-Igbo.

Esther told PUNCH Metro on the telephone that she was bathing one of their children when her attention was called to the dangling corpse of her husband.

She said:

“We have been married for the past 15 years and we had five children together. While he was a commercial okada rider, I am into trading. He was on his motorcycle on May 3, 2016, when he was involved in an accident.

“He broke his leg. Since that time, he had been staying at home and we had been managing the little I could provide for the family.

“Although he had yet to fully recover to start working again, he had started using crutches.

“Last night (Monday), he said he didn’t want to eat rice, that he wanted something else. Later, he threatened that he would kill himself. I begged him not to, but he shunned me. I called one of his brothers, who also came to talk to him. But he said he would sell his motorcycle and return to the village.

“This morning (Tuesday), I was bathing our child when one of the other children came to call me that their father was dangling from the ceiling. I ran there and met him dead.”

A resident, Mr. Kehinde Ogunbanjo, told Punch that the deceased killed himself because he could no longer provide for his family.

“The accident really affected him. He was depressed due to financial difficulty and because he could not provide for his family,” he said.

A source said policemen from the Ijebu Igbo division had visited the scene.

He explained that the police did not go with the corpse because it was the tradition of the town that whenever anyone died in that circumstance, certain rites must be performed before burial.

“The Osugbo cult will take the corpse away. The police only took the statement of the wife,” he said.

The Police Public Relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident, adding that the police did not suspect any foul play.

Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police, however, said the victim’s wife in her statement claimed she met her husband’s corpse after returning from their children’s school, where she had gone to pay school fees.

He said:

“The man’s wife, Esther, reported at the station that she went to the children’s school to settle their school fees and on her return, she discovered that her husband, Monday, had committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope.

“Detectives visited the scene and took pictures. All necessary arrangements have been put in place to move the body to the mortuary. No foul play suspected, while investigations are ongoing.”

Pep Guardiola bans Man City players from eating pizza & banishes overweight players like Nasri from first team

Pep Guardiola, who has succeeded Manuel Pellegrini as manager at Man City following three seasons in charge of Bayern Munich, has imposed a strict fitness regime at Manchester City that includes players being forced to train away from the first-team if they are overweight. Pep has also banned his players from eating pizza and high calorie juices too.

Samir Nasri is one of those Guardiola has ordered to lose weight and the 29-year-old must shed the pounds before he can rejoin his team-mates in training.

“On the field, outside the field, every detail counts,” Man City defender Gael Clichy said. For example, you often hear managers say being healthy is really important. With him, if you’re weight is too high, you’re not training with the team. That is the first thing and you can hear it a lot, but for my part it’s the first time any manager has really done it. So we have a few players who are not training with the team yet.”

“He cut out some juice and pizza and all the heavy food is not allowed,” said the 31-year-old France international. Some people think: ‘That’s normal, it should be like this.’ But in truth it’s not always like this and I know because I’ve been playing football for a long time. It’s really refreshing and very exciting.”

“He’s an ideal manager for any kind of player. The goalkeeper needs to be better with their feet, the centre-backs are improving, the full-backs are important, the centre midfield – he said something like if he could play 11 midfielders, he would play them, so I guess for a midfielder it’s unbelievable. And the strikers are going to score a lot of goals because we are going to create a lot of chances. I can even tell you that the assistant manager will improve so he’s the kind of guy that, if you’re lucky to work with him during your career, he is someone you will remember for a long time because he’s truly impressive.”

“I’ve been lucky because I’ve trained only a few weeks with Guardiola and I was eight years with Wenger,” he said. “There are a lot of similarities between the two but also so much difference. In eight or nine years, Guardiola has won pretty much everything and he’s changed the way we see football.
“He was probably one of the first to bring the full-backs really high, to put a midfield player as a centre-back. It’s a step forward. Wenger, years ago, brought something back from wherever he was [France and Japan] into English football and kind of changed the way people see football. I guess the two of them are just great managers but you could say the same for Ferguson and Mourinho.

“Every manager has their own philosophy and for sure he’s coming with his own ideas and it’s quite refreshing for us.”

Slicing cucumbers are cultivated to be eaten fresh, while pickling cucumbers are intended for the brine jar. Slicing cucumbers are usually larger and thicker-skinned than pickling ones.

While most people think of cucumbers as vegetables, they are actually a fruit. They contain seeds and grow from the ovaries of flowering plants. Cucumbers are members of the plant family Cucurbitaceae, which also includes squashes and melons. The most common type of slicing cucumber found in a grocery store is the garden cucumber, Cucumis sativus, according to World’s Healthiest Foods.

Nutritional profile

Cucumbers are good sources of phytonutrients (plant chemicals that have protective or disease preventive properties) such flavonoids, lignans and triterpenes, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits, according to World’s Healthiest Foods. The peel and seeds are the most nutrient-dense parts of the cucumber. They contain fiber and beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A that is good for eyes, reports Livestrong.com. A study published in the Pakistan Journal of Nutrition found that cucumber seeds were a good source of minerals, and contained calcium.

“Cucumbers are naturally low in calories, carbohydrates, sodium, fat and cholesterol,” said Megan Ware, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Orlando, Florida. There are just 16 calories in a cup of cucumber with its peel (15 without). You will get about 4 percent of your daily potassium, 3 percent of your daily fiber and 4 percent of your daily vitamin C. They also “provide small amounts of vitamin K, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, manganese and vitamin A,” Ware said

Here are the nutrition facts for cucumbers, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates food labeling through the Nutritional Labeling and Education Act:

Health benefits of cucumbers

Hydration

According to Ware, “Cucumbers are 95 percent water." This makes cucumbers a great way to stay hydrated, especially during the summer. A cup of cucumber slices is “nearly as thirst-quenching as a glass of water,” according to Eating Well magazine.

The anti-inflammatory compounds in cucumbers help remove waste from the body and reduce skin irritation, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Preliminary research also suggests cucumbers promote anti-wrinkling and anti-aging activity, according to an article in the journal Filoterapia.

Cancer prevention

Cucumbers contain two phytonutrient compounds associated with anti-cancer benefits: lignans and cucurbitacins. In recent years, pharmaceutical companies have been paying special attention to cucurbitacins, hoping to use them in new cancer drugs. According to a 2010 research review published in Scientific World Journal, scientists have found that cucurbitacins can help block the signaling pathways that are important for cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Cucurbitacins can also inhibits the growth of pancreatic cancer cells, according to a 2009 study published in the Journal of Cancer Research looked at cucurbitacin B (which cucumber contains) on human pancreatic cancer cells and found that cucurbitacin supplements inhibited the growth of seven pancreatic cancer cell lines by 50 percent, and also increased apoptosis, or "death by suicide," of pancreatic cancer cells.

According to World’s Healthiest Foods, lignans may protect against cancer through working with the bacteria in the digestive tract. The bacteria take the lignans and convert them into compounds such as enterodiol and enterolactone, which can bind onto estrogen receptors and possibly reduce the risk of estrogen-related cancers, such as ovarian, breast, endometrial and prostate cancers. The research is not yet clear on whether lignans actually assert anti-cancer benefits.

A 2009 meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Cancer found little or no association between lignan intake and reduced breast cancer risk. Similarly, most studies have not found significant correlations between lignan intake and reduced prostate cancer risk, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, though one study of older Scottish men published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that consuming an enterolactone-containing serum reduced the risk of prostate cancer.

On the other hand, a Journal of Nutrition study of nearly 800 American women found that those with those with the highest lignan intake had the lowest risk of ovarian cancer. Furthermore, a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute looked at nearly 1,000 women in the San Francisco area and found that postmenopausal women with the highest lignan intakes had the lowest risk of endometrial cancer.

Skin

You’ve probably seen pictures of people at a spa relaxing with cucumber slices over their eyes. It turns out there’s science behind this pampering ritual. Ware explained, “Cucumbers have a cooling and soothing effect that decreases swelling, irritation and inflammation when used topically. Cucumber slices can be placed on the eyes can decrease morning puffiness or alleviate and treat sunburn when placed on the affected areas.” She also noted that high vegetable intake is associated with a healthy complexion in general.

Bone health

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, in the past few decades, it has become clear that vitamin K is important to bone health, and one cup of cucumber contains about 19 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin K. One review published in Nutrition noted that vitamin K intake might reduce fracture rates, work with vitamin D to increase bone density and positively affect calcium balance.

The human body uses vitamin K when building bones, and the effects seem to be especially important for women. A large 2003 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study showed that low vitamin K levels were associated with low bone density in women, but not in men. Another study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1999 found that low intakes of vitamin K were associated with an increased risk of hip fractures in middle-age women. This is especially interesting because the women saw results from eating lettuce, showing that dietary consumption of vitamin K via eating vegetables (not supplements) is beneficial. When it comes to men, the affects of vitamin K and bone health may become more apparent as they age: A 2000 study saw reduced risk of hip fracture among both elderly women and elderly men who consumed more vitamin K.

Antioxidants

Cucumbers contain several antioxidants, including vitamin C, beta-carotene and manganese, as well as flavonoids, triterpenes and lignans that have anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin C is well known for its immune system benefits, and beta-carotene has been shown to be beneficial for vision, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Heart health

“Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables of all kinds is associated with a reduced risk for many health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke and obesity,” said Ware. Cucumbers’ potassium content may be especially helpful in this regard. One cup of sliced cukes contains only about 4 percent of the body’s daily potassium needs, but it comes with significantly fewer calories than most high-potassium foods like bananas. Potassium is an essential part of heart health, according to the American Heart Association.

Risks of eating cucumbers

There can be a few risks from eating cukes. Pesticide consumption is one concern. Ware explained, “The Environmental Working Group produces a list each year of fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of pesticide residue, known as the Dirty Dozen. Cucumbers are one of the fruits and vegetables that the Environmental Working Group has placed on its Dirty Dozen list, meaning the exposure to pesticide residue is high.”

Additionally, cucumbers may be waxed to help protect them during shipping. According to World’s Healthiest Foods, both organic and conventionally grown cukes may be waxed, but organic ones can only use non-synthetic waxes with chemicals approved under organic regulations. For this reason and the pesticide concerns, World’s Healthiest Foods encourages buying organic cucumbers. But Ware stipulated, “This does not mean you should avoid cucumbers altogether if you can’t find or afford organic. The nutritional benefit of eating conventionally grown produce outweighs the risk of not eating produce at all.”

SPORT: Zidane Confirms Real Madrid Are Still Trying To Sign Pogba

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has confirmed the club are still pushing to sign in-demand Juventus star Paul Pogba this summer.
The Spanish giants have been strongly linked with Pogba but have fallen behind Manchester United in the race to land him.

It was reported earlier this month that United have an agreement in place to sign Pogba for €110m (£92m), which would make him the most expensive player of all time.
However, Zidane has revealed the France midfielder is still a target for Madrid and insists “anything can happen” regarding Pogba’s future from now unti the end of August.
“In this moment we are still working [on a move for Pogba], and I cannot say anything more,” the Madrid coach said.

“Until August 31 anything can happen, but today he is not a Real Madrid player and I cannot talk about what will happen.
“I always say how things are, but now is not the time to talk about this. A lot of clubs are interested in Pogba.

“Real Madrid always want the best players. But we owe Juventus respect, and I can’t say anything more out of respect.”

Madrid are in the United States ahead of their International Champions Cup clash with Paris Saint-Germain in Columbus.
And Zidane also confirmed James Rodriguez, Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric will not play, having only just joined up with the squad.

Watch Your Utterances – Niger Delta Militants Issue Serious Warning To Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Yusuf Buratai has been cautioned by MEND over his recent statement on the Niger Delta agitations

Lt General Tukur Burutai

A recent statement credited to the army boss, Lt General Tukur Burutai reveals the Nigerian army would employ the use of force to suppress the Niger Delta militants destroying oil facilities at the failure of peaceful negotiation.

This has infuriated one of the influential Niger Delta militant groups named the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND trying to broker peace in the region, according to the Vanguard.

The group on Monday night cautioned Burutai, to stick to his principal responsibility and stop making political and inciting statements.

MEND in a statement by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, frowned at comments, Monday, in Port Harcourt by Burutai that military authorities would resort to the use of force if dialogue to resolve the current Niger-Delta crisis fails.

The militant group asserted: “MEND hereby makes it clear that General Buratai’s statement is insensitive, provocative, unprofessional and prejudicial to the fair outcome of the ongoing preliminary talks regarding the Niger Delta crisis between representatives of oil companies and security agencies, on the one hand; and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), on the other hand.

“We, therefore, warn the Chief of Army Staff to guard his utterances, refrain from making political and inflammatory statements and stick to his primary responsibility.”

On its controversial dialogue with the federal government, it said: “We use this medium to appeal to the good people of the Niger Delta to remain patient with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

The group urged them to “keep hope alive as MEND and the Aaron Team 2 Dialogue, Peace and Development Initiative, led by Mr. Odein Ajumogobia, and HRH King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff are working assiduously to secure sustainable concessions for the region from the government.”

“While MEND has already kick-started the dialogue process with the ongoing preliminary talks, the Aaron Team made up of distinguished and accomplished personalities from the region, are waiting on the sidelines to conclude the dialogue process.”

14-year-old girl dies in second shocking double rape case in India

A 14-year-old girl has died in another case of a lower-caste woman allegedly being raped by the same man twice in India.

The girl was kidnapped in May by the same suspect who allegedly attacked her in December, according to a police report filed by her parents, a senior Delhi police official told CNN.

The suspect was reportedly out on bail while he awaited trial in the first rape case involving the girl.

The girl belonged to the Dalit caste, Swati Maliwal, chairwoman of the Delhi Commission for Women, told CNN. Dalit is the lowest caste in Indian society.
Her parents told police the alleged attacker forced the girl to drink chemicals.

She died Sunday after being admitted to the hospital in June when she fell ill. The suspect was arrested again following her death, police said.

The girl's death comes after brutal details emerged last week of another case of a Dalit student allegedly raped by the same group of men for a second time.

The allegations of the double gang-rape caused an international outcry, raised questions around why the accused were granted bail and highlighted the vulnerability of Dalit women in India.

According to India's National Crime Records Bureau, more than four Dalit women are raped every day, with 2014 statistics saying crime against Dalits rose 19%. In many of the cases, these crimes are committed by perpetrators from an upper caste.

"For centuries, the lower caste (has) been subject to oppression, and one form of suppressing their empowerment has been through violence," Sunitha Krishnan, a rape survivor, activist and mental health specialist, told CNN.

"And to a woman or a child, the worst form of violence you can think of is sexual assault and sex crime."
