Does romance have no barriers? Or should love obey moral rules? This is the heated debate online, sparked by an unusual marriage proposal from a lecturer to her student. No matter on which side you stand, this love story, as far as the couple is concerned, had a happy ending.
The female college teacher in a wedding dress made her very public proposal at Hunan University of Art and Science on Sunday. The student said “yes,” and they embraced in happiness. Many of the university’s students gathered to witness the whole process, with some of the young man’s classmates saying that he had been in a public relationship with his professor for quite a while, and had been planning on getting engaged for a long time.
According to the students, the teacher is 12 years older than her student, with the story of their romance and related photos instantly making waves online.
Some netizens voiced their support for the teacher’s romantic gesture. User @wangjinihaonan on China’s Twitter-like microblog Weibo wrote “not everyone has the courage for true love. Love should have no limits. Congratulations!”
Other netizens thought their relationship was a violation of moral issues. @ kaienhsu wrote “the teacher should be fired. Romance between teachers and students is an abuse of power.”
Earlier on May 31 in an article published in China Youth Daily, Yan Yiming, a professor of the Beijing Institute of Technology, called for an "explicit ban on romance between teachers and students," adding that ethical relations between teachers and students have become a problem in Chinese higher education.
According to news portal cnr.cn, when compared with their US counterparts, the Chinese public is more tolerant of teacher-student romances, with 90 percent of netizens believing that "free love" should not be banned on campus.
